RANGIPO SWAMP

LAND NEAR WHANGAMATA

QUESTION OF PRODUCTION

A reply to the request he forwarded on behalf of the Thames County Council to the Minister of Lands, asking that steps should be taken to bring into production an area of swamp land near the main road north of Whangamata, has been received by Mr J. Thorn, M.P., and forwarded to the council.

“The area in question is sometimes referred to as the Rangipo Swamp, and it lies within Compartment 15 of the Rangipo State Forest,” says the reply, from the Minister. “It contains about 250 acres and is deep peat a little above spring tide level. The prospect of successfully draining the area is uncertain and could not be determined without a full engineering investigation.

“It is not possible to carry out this at present, and the most that can be done at this stage is to note the matter for further investigation when circumstances permit. This will be done; but it Should be pointed out that in any case the land is not regarded as offering prospects for the successful settlement of ex-service-men.”
