CHAIRMAN’S STAND

USE OF PELTON WHEELS

NOT TO BE DISCONNECTED RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL At the February meeting of the Coromandel County Council the chairman, Mr E. Deeible, made a statement in regard to the action he had taken in instructing the foreman not to cut off the pelton wheels' in Coromandel in conformity with the resolution passed at the December meeting of the council. He said the council had passed a resolution without knowing the full and correct position of the water supply. “I myself,” he continued, “did not realise the seriousness of the position. I received two petitions signed by residents, one for Messrs Denize Bros.’ and one for Mr M. R. ’Darling’s

pelton wheels not to be cut off and giving the reasons. Conflicting reports had been received as to the quantity of water in the upper township including the hospital and it was these factors that weighed with me in making my decision.”

Cr. W. Hamilton said he could not support the chairman’s action. Several councillors were emphatic that the pelton wheels be cut off in view of the report which had been received.

The chairman asked -that the resolution of the December meeting be suspended for the time being and pending further detailed and correct information being received. The matter then rested.
