BREACH OF BY-LAW?

HOUSE AT WHITIANGA DISCUSSED BY COUNCIL EXPLANATION TO BE SOUGHT

The building inspector reported to the November meeting of the Coromandel County Council that a breach of the by-laws had been made in respect of a house recently erected in Mercury Bay and he suggested a letter be sent to the owner to the effect that opportunity be given to show cause why she should not be prosecuted.

Cr. A. Watkins spoke of the circumstances and mentioned that the owner was living in the house before

it was completed because she had to be near the hospital for treatment and also that difficulty had been experienced in obtaining material. Crs. H. C. Bull and T. E. ‘Simpson both expressed the opinion that in view of the recent visit of the town planning officer and the decision of the council to go in for town planning under expert guidance , that the regulations of the by-laws should be rigidly enforced. If laxity in enforcing these regulations were allowed in this or any other instance there would be no end to it and they might as well scrap the by-laws and Ibe back where they were. After further discussion regarding the timber stated in the by-laws and relevant subjects it was finally resolved that a copy of the inspector’s report be sent to the owner of the house in question.

Timber in readiness for the building of another house in Whitianga was also the subject of comment at the meeting and it was resolved to bring it to the notice of the inspector before the building was proceeded with.
