ONLY HALF

ALL PURPOSES APPEAL COLLECTIONS IN COUNTY £719/6/0 SUBSCRIBED TO DATE That the total subscribed to date on the Coromandel Peninsula for the 1944 All Purposes Patriotic Appeal is only £719 6s Od. merely half the quota allotted the district is disclosed in the followihg circular sent to all patriotic committees in the area by the secretary of the Coromandel Inter-Zone Patriotic Committee, Mr J. H. Lucas. The report read as under: — “In the last circular the amounts of cash collected were not allocated to all the various original sub-com-mittee areas and consequently some slight misunderstanding has crept in, some of these originally constituted sub-committees have ceased to function, or at least ceased to organise efforts and send in any money and although certain individuals , have

supported the effort and sent along their cash and cheques these amounts have not appeared against the subcommittee quota but have been pooled with the respective group. “The total paid in to the fund so far this year is only one-half of the amount required from the county and nine months of the yeai’ have gone. The western, group is lagging behind. It has not yet collected much over one-third. It is evident that the appeal sent out for straight-out giving of some months ago has not met with the response desired, therefore some other effort will need to be made if the western group is to do its share this year.

“I have recently sorted up ready for sending away a further 30 pairs of sox, 23 pairs mittens, 32 scarves, .19 balaclavas, one pullover, which have been knitted 1 by workers scattered over the county. The efforts of the ladies concerned I am sure are very much appreciated. The total number of articles made that I have record of is as follows:—Scarves 456, balaclavas '553, pairs mittens 403, pairs sox 260, pullovers 6, gloves 12, hussifs 78. “I still have some wool on hand.”
