SPRING BLOOMS
INSTITUTE FLOWER SHOW WHITIANGA FUNCTION RESULTS OF THE COMPETITIONS The usual September flower show arranged by the Mercury Bay Women's Institute was held on September "2 in the Whitianga Hall. The flowers were lovely, though perhaps not a ; s many entries as usual. The children’s section was particularly good and caused much admiration. There was a good attendance nd brisk business was done at the stalls.
Mrs Ralph, president of ’the Women's Institute introduced Mr A. Watkjns who opened the show. Mrs Stocker assisted Mr Watkins in judging the flower and - vagatable sections.
Mrs Barton of Auckland!, entertained the audience with two recitations. Mr J. Howe sang two solos accompanied by Mrs Sharpies.
Afternoon tea was served by the committee. Results:— Best daffodil.—Mrs Hodge 1. Best three daffodils.—Miss E. Lee 1. Best six daffodils.—Mrs Harrison 1. Bowl anemones.—Miss Forbes 1. Iceland poppies.—Maureen Seymour 1. Stock.—Mrs Nicholson 1. Head stock—Mrs J. W. Smith 1. Violets.—Maureen Seymour 1. Bowl of Flowers.—Mrs Worden. . Vast of flowers.—Mrs Hodge 1. Pot plant.—Mrs Bronlurid 1. Collection of vegetables. — Miss Howell 1. Best arranged flowers. — Mrs Troughear 1. Freesias.—Mrs Ralph 1. Children’s Section Vase of flowers.—Lorna Colquhoun 1. Posy.—Heather Lee 1. Miniature garden.—Brenda Lee 1. Hand-work.—Lorna Colquhoun 1. The show was very successful and resulted in about £l7 10s being added to the Women’s Institute funds. Mrs J. W. Smith received the flowers at the hall. Mrs Worden and Mrs McLeod were in the produce stall. The secretary and treasurer were also very busy attending to their many duties. Mrs Prestage attended to the door-charges. , ’
