FARMER FINED

PASSED ON A BEND INCIDENT AT HIKUTAIA CASE HEARD IN PAEROA COURT A fine of £-2 10s with costs 12s, was imposed by Mr 'W. H. Freeman, iS.M., in the Paeroa Court on Monday on Stanley Reid Heslop, on a charge of driving without due care. Heslop who pleaded guilty was represented by Mr R. S. Carden. Traffic-Inspector !G. A. Ferguson stated that on June 12. he had been patrolling towards Paeroa just past Hikutaia when a car travelling at between 40 and 50 m.p.h. passed him. He had given chase but had been unable to overtake Heslop as Heslop passed a truck on a sharp ibend. Later he overtook Heslop who was then doing 40 m.p.h. When he was abreast of Heslop’s car Heslop increased speed

and bore in. He had signalled him to stop and Heslop had then explained that he thought the inspector was a friend who was trying to pass him. Heslop, he contended, did not have visibility at the corner when he passed. Mr Carden, stated that the visibility at the corner in question was good and was better still when Heslop pulled to the right to pass the truck. Heslop had been driving for 30' years without previous trouble. Magistrate: Passing a car at a bend is always dangerous.
