BADLY CRACKED

PIAKO ROAD DRAIN BANK REPORT FROM ENGINEER PROBLEM FOR THE FUTURE That approximately one chain of the bank on the south side of the Piako road drain was badly cracked and slowly moving into the drain was reported by the county engineer, Mr Hazledine Barber to the July Ineeting of the Hauraki Plains County Council. ’ The report added: — “This is where we had a leak on the water main and this may have either started' or accentuated the trouble. “ I suggest timbering the foot of the bank for this distance but at the same time recommend that the drainage board concerned be requested not to deepen this drain now or at any future date or we shall be extremely likely to lose the water main in places, not to mention the road. Mr F. J. Mayne said the drainage •board could not deepen the drain and endanger the road. The council should serve the necessary notice on the drainage board. Drains Near 'Roads a Mistake Mr D. G. McMillan said it had. been a mistake to place* the water mains along near the drains. It was also a mistake to have drains near the road*

On Piako road there were two drains, one each side of the road. and not only the county would have trouble, but the drainage board also had a dot of trouble before it. Other members agreed with Mr McMillan that drains along roads were a mistake. Mr A. H. Sutton said' he thought the time would come when one of the Piako roadside drains' would have to be filled in. The engineer was authorised to strengthen the side of the bank with timber and the clerk was instructed to write to the drainage board requesting them not to deepen the drain owing to the danger which would result to the road and water main.
