THE Hauraki Plains Gazette With which is Incorporated THE OHINEMURI GAZETTE. MONDAY, WEDNESDAY, FRIDAY. “ Public Service.” WEDNESDAY, MAY 10, 1944. HELP IN PRODUCTION

The statement by the Minister of Manpower, Mr McLagan, that the services of almost 10,000 teachers, students and school children had been used by his department to assist industries over the recent summer vacation period shows how willing people are to respond to a call for service in emergencies when they are given a lead. According to the Minister the experiment was on the whole very successful, complaints being comparatively few, either with respect to the conditions experienced by those employed or in regard to the quality of the services given. Whether the practical results were reasonably commensurate with the numbers employed it would be interesting to know. The Minister appears to be satisfied enough on that score to feel encouraged that he will be able to rely on a dependable reservoir of assistance to meet future seasonal demands for manpower in the primary and other industries should the need arise, as seems certain under existing war conditions. This kind of co-operation is particularly valuable, specially in view of the appeal to the primary industries for a big step-up in production to meet the urgent food requirements of Britain and of the fighting forces in the Pacific.
