COROMANDEL INSTITUTE AN INTERESTING MEETING CONGRATULATIONS TO PIPIROA The April meeting of the Coromandel Women’s Institute was held in the Oddfellows’ Hall on Wednesday, April 5. The vice-president, Mrs Anderson, presided over a very good attendance of members. An apology was received from the president, Mrs D. Strongman who was away and unable to return in time for the meeting. The meeting opened with the Institute Prayer after which the federation president’s monthly letter was read and discussed. Attention was drawn to the report of the baby institute at Pipiroa and their magnificent effort held recently. A very small membership created history in institute affairs when they held their garden party in the hall (owing to wet weather) and netted the excellent sum of over £4O. It was decided to send a letter of congratulation to the institute on their marvellous achievement.

Notice was received in connection with the Adult Educational Winter School to be held next month at die Epsom Grammar School. Mrs Anderson was unanimously elected as this institute’s delegate to the May council in Auckland and the question of remits at same was left to the discretion of the delegate. The motto for the month was “Friends are much better tried in bad times than in good.” The roll call which was “Where I first met my husband,” was well responded to and proved varied and amusing.

Dr. Logan was proposed and ac cepted as a member by acclamation

It was suggested that this institute form a gardening circle, Mrs Battson explaining the idea and members were asked to thing it over with a view to finalising the arrangements at the next meeting.

The Suggestion Box was in evidence and it is. hoped that members will see that«new ideas are put forward via this means, in order to assist the committee in. making the programmes for the meeting as attractive and varied as possible.

An interesting talk on “Life As A Prisoner of War,” was given by Mrs Anderson, when she was able to give first-hand facts as told her by a repatriated prisoner of war, W.O. McAlister, of Auckland, who had been in the same camp as her* son S.-Sgt. Chris. Anderson.

A dainty supper was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Murphy and Turner after which the meeting closed with the National Anthem.

The results of the evening’s competitions which were numerous and of a high standard were as follow: — Decorated Easter eggs.—Mrs L. Davies 1, Mrs McKinley 2, Mrs E. James 3.
