TO INSPECT ROUTE

PROMISE FROM MINISTER PAEROA-PATETONGA ROAD LETTER FROM MR J. THORN M.P. Advice that the Minister of Works, Hon. R. Semple, accompanied by the Ministers of Rehabilitation and Land will visit the district in May to inspect the proposed route of the Paeroa to Patetonga road, is contained in a letter from Mr J. Thorn, M.P. to the Paeroa Chamber of, Commerce. Mr Thorn writes as under: — “As promised, Mr A. Sutherland M.P. and I met the Hon. R. Semple, Minister of Works, yesterday with reference to the above project. I had previously let the Minister have the Hauraki Plains Gazette report of the Kerepeehi meeting on the matter which covered all the arguments for the road.

“We re-stated these arguments and laid special stress on the possibility of land development. We also urged the Minister to visit the district to see the problem on the spot. Not Before End of War “In his reply the Minister stated that the peat and its depth presented very serious difficulty. The road proposal, however, he said would be placed on a list of works for consideration as to its urgency. He also stated that owing to manpower shortages it would be impossible, whatever decision may be come to as to desirability of the project, to commence it before the war ends. “Mr Semple promised to visit the area some time in May when it is probable that the Hon. Minister of Rehabilitation and Land will also be in the district. I hope to be able to accompany them.”
