OPEN SPORTS MEETING ’"athletics in paeroa VUGLAR WINS INVITATION Although the track was heavy after recent rain the weather was fine for the open sports meeting held by the Paeroa Amateur Harrier Club on the Paeroa Domain on Saturday to conclude its 1943-44 summer season and ■a large attendance of the public was treated to an excellent afternoon s sport. Due to the efficient organisation laid down by the manager, Mr F. D. Sharp and his assistant, Mr F. 'Craig, combined with a capable team of officials the whole programme—.a large one for an afternoon, was run off to time without a hitch and there was not a dull moment for the spectators.

A special feature of the programme was the invifation 220yds. low hurdles in which G. Vuglar of Paeroa, the Waikato champion won comfortably from Leitch of Hamilton with Cooper the Auckland champion third. Vuglar who was off scratch led into the straight from Leitch and Cooper who started off 6yds. and 14yds. behind respectively ■ and the positions did not change in the fight to the post. At 3 p.m. sharp the grand parade was held, athletes from Paeroa, Tatiranga, Matamata, Hamilton, Te Aroha, Technical Old Boys (Auckland), Otahuhu, Ounehunga, Manukau and Morrinsville, all taking part.

After the parade had been drawn up in front of the grandstand His Worship, Mr Edwin Edwards, patron of the Paeroa club extended a welcome to all who had assembled on the Paeroa Domain to make the function the great success it was. He specially referred to Mr H. Sommers of Tauranga, the president of the Waikato Sub-Centre and the other officials and athletes of that area as well as those who had come from Auckland.

•Continuing, Mr Edwards expressed pleasure that athletics had been successfully carried on in Paeroa during the last season in spite of the difficulties which existed to-day. He specially thanked Mr F. D. Sharp and his assistant, Mr F. Craig, and the other enthusiasts on behalf of the people for keeping the sport going. Through the weekly evening sports held on the domain much good had resulted, especially to the children of the district.

The Mayor congratulated G. Vuglar on his win in the 220yds. invitation hurdles race and in conclusion expressed his appreciation for the support ■given by the public to make the day a successful one. ,

Mr H. Sommers thanked the Mayoz for his remarks emphasising that the aim of the Sub-Centre was to provide healthy sport to keep the young men and women of the community fit and well. He congratulated the Paeroa Harrier Club on the success of its open meeting. In the evening a very successful presentation dance was held in the Civic Ballroom, the hall being packed to capacity with visiting athletes and supporters.

During the evening Mr C. C. Webb presented the trophies won during the day and congratulated the winners on their success. Music was supplied 'by the Paeroa Melody Makers and Mr F.
