BIG INCREASE

STOCK LOADED AT PAEROA FACILITIES AT STATION IMPROVEMENTS AUTHORISED To facilitate the handling of the increased numbers of cattle, sheep, lambs and pigs which to-day are being shipped through the Paeroa Railway Station the Minister of Railways, the Hon. R. Semple, has authorised the erection of a double deck race for discharging sheep, lambs and pigs in place of the present single deck race and the provision of additional holding yards for cattle. The present holding yards are also to be concreted. The Minister in advising Mr J. Thorn, M.P. for Thames, of this decision, wrote as under; — ‘‘Some time ago representatives of the stock agents, buyers and regular of stock at 'Paeroa made representations to the Railways Department urging that certain improvements be put in hand at the local stock yards. Increase Considerable “In support of the representations it was pointed out that the natural increase of stock in the district was considerable and that boner cattle, which, for a number of years, were driven by road to Horotiu and Westfield, also sheep, lambs and pigs which, prior to the petrol and rubber conservation restrictions were conveyed by lorries to the same works, have now been diverted to rail and difficulty is being experienced in handling- the livestock with, the existing facilities. Approval has therefore been given for the existing single deck race which is used for the discharging of sheep, lambs and pigs, to be replaced iby a double deck race.

Concrete Holding Yards

“It is also proposed to provide an additional cattle holding yard and to concrete the holding yards. “ As IPaeroa Station is in your electorate I am advising you of the provements that, are being put in hand in order that you may be au fait with the position.”
