Alamein Fund of £41,000
New Zealand was represented by General Freyberg and senior officers, and New Zealand pipe and brass bands were in attendance, at the opening of the Alamein Club in Cairo recently. The club fund, realising £41,000, was found in a week to establish the forces institution as a token of appreciation of the stand by British afid Dominion troops at Alamein and in successful battles which commenced the Axis retreat from North Africa.
