OVERRUN WITH GORSE

AREA IN PIAKO COUNTY COUNCIL DECIDES TO ACT In the course of hi& report to the Piako County Council’s June meeting of the Noxious Weeds Inspector, Mr Ron. Eastwood, drew attention to the fact that the Thames High School endowment area at, Waiorongomai was overrun with gorse which was being spread far and wide by a creek. Patches of gorse were appearing at numerous places along the creek and river side. Cr. D. Burgess corroborated this portion of Mr Eastwood’s report, saying that he could remember the time when there was practically no gorse to be found along the creek in question. To-day it was difficult to approach because of the gorse and the pest was becoming common along the course of the creek and on farms. He considered that the position had got beyond the control of the lessee as there were over 200 acres of gorse infested land. It was agreed that the Thames High ‘School authorities should be approached to confer with the county. A County Matter A further discussion took place on other gorse in the county, Gr. Harris asking that the inspector be given power to ask Walton farmers to attend to the isolated patches of gorse in Walton and if attended to now, it would be effectively checked. It was then urged that action should ;be county wide and not sectional, and after a long discussion it was agreed that the inspector be given power to interview farmers to ask them to endeavour to have their frontages cleared of noxious weeds.
