SPORTS GROUND OPENED

SCHOOL TENNIS COURT

FUNCTION AT WAITAWHETA

Although overcast weather prevailed for the gala day staged at the opening of the Waitawheta School Tennis and Sports ‘Ground on Saturday, April 3, it did not mar the success of the occasion, the sum of £4l being taken. The chairman of the Waitawheta School Committee, Mr F. L. Franklin, thanked all those who had come along and helped so generously and hoped all would spend a pleasant afternoon. He specially thanked Mr J. Thorn, M.P. for Thames, for the assistance he had given and said it was through his efforts that it had ■been possible to seal the court. He also congratulated the teacher, Miss Barron, on the interest she had taken in the school and in the children and said both the teacher and the children were to be congratulated on their outstanding Patriotic effort.

Mr Belamy, on behalf of the parents, also thanked Mr Thorn for what

he had done and said it would be a great boon to the children.

Miss Barron wished to add her thanks on behalf of the children and herself to Mr Thorn and to the chairman for their efforts in getting the grounds done and said it would bring them more in line with town schools.

Mr Thorn, before proceeding to open the courts, congratulated the people on having such a well-kept school and grounds set in delightful surroundings. He said that when he received a letter from the chairman three years ago asking for his assistance he did not the delay that had occurred. Wai' conditions had*made things more difficult. He hoped the sports grounds would prove a link between the parents and the school. With a humorous “Watch me,” he drove the first ball and declared the court open.

The organising secretary, Mrs Roberts, was congratulated on the success of the afternoon.
