RATE REDUCED

PLAINS COUNTY COUNCIL

SAVING OF M IN THE £

GENERAL RATE OF 4D IN THE £

A decision to reduce the general rate by Id in the £ while leaving the special and separate rates the same as last year with the exception of the Horiahia Opou Drainage Rate which was lowered by |d in the £, was made at Wednesday’s meeting of the Hauraki Plains County Council. The general rate for 1943-44 will be 4d in the £ on the unimproved value of the county, £840,000, which will realise £14,000. '

The clerk, Mr E. A. Mahoney, reported on the estimates as under: — “Herewith I present estimates for 1943-44.- Main highway, reading and bridging estimates shown in bulk are from the engineer’s estimates in detail attached.

“It will be noticed that I have included all commitments which have been rated for in past years, but the work not undertaken. This policy is sound, as finances are conserved to do the works when the time is opportune. If they were omitted from. the estimates, there would be a drop to a corresponding amount in general rate and when the work was to be done, difficulty may be experienced in raising the rate again. “It will be noticed that hospital .levy is increased by about £7OO for 1943-44.

“I have included £250“ for renovation of county houses and these are badly in need of painting and other repair?. “I think all other estimates will be found to be as sound as is possible in these changing .times. “I have pleasure in recommending a decrease of Id in the £ in general rate and this can be done without repercussions in the future. In fact, I do not consider the general rate need ever be more from now. “I recommend that the special and other rates be the same as last year with the exception of Horahia Opou drainage rate which I recommend should be reduced to id from the Id in the £ which it has been heretofore. Following are the Special and Drainage Rates recommended: —■ Conyersion Loan No. 1 —- —2 d Conversion Loan No. 2— — 3ad Horahia Opou Drainage — -- Sd East .Water Supply —- --2 d Waitakaruru Drainage Loan: «A” —- —- — 2Sd “g” .... — 2|d .... . id Waitakaruru Drainage Rate: “A” —- —- —2 d <‘g” .... — lad id The recommendations stated above were approved.
