COROMANDEL INSTITUTE ENJOYABLE MEETING HELD The monthly meeting of the Coromandel branch of the Women’s Institute was held in the Oddfellows’ Hall on Wednesday, April 7. The president, Mrs D. Strongman, presided over a full attendance of members.

The meeting opened with the Institute Prayer. A short discussion took place in connection with the matter of sending a delegate to attend a week’s course of lectures in June or thereabouts at the University. It was finally resolved to send the secretary, Miss G. Russell, from this branch.

A vote of thanks was passed to Mr H. V. Denize for the use of his shop premises which were used for the recent Paddy’s market. The secretary read the Federation President’s monthly letter. Remits for 'the May council were discussed and this Institute decided to instruct their delegate to vote in favour of them.

A letter of apology was received from the Colville branch of the W.D.F.U. for not attending the birthday owing to transport problem. A sample of the Whitianga Institute’s birthday cake was received and handed round to the members. Appreciation was expressed at the friendly gesture in sending the cake over.

A discussion took place in connection with the W.E.A. lectures, it being proposed to form a committee in Coromandel, with a view to having regular lectures in the near future. Mrs King was appointed as the Institute’s nominee for the executive committee.

The roll call which was, “What profession I’d like to take up if able to do so,” was well responded to, the nursing profession taking first place.

The motto for the month was: “Judge not thy friend till thou standest in his place.” The hostesses for the evening were .Mrs Gamble and Mrs F. L. Davies, who served a dainty supper.

The results of the competitions were as follows: —

Brooches made from breadcrumbs: Mrs Deeble, 1; Mrs Dear, 2; Miss V. Davies, 3. ■Soda Loaf: Mrs King, 1; Mrs Dear, 2; Mrs A. Davisj 3. Kumeras: Mrs Battson, 1; Mrs Dear, 2. Buttons: Mrs Anderson (only entry). ' . Wall Competition: Mrs McKenzie and Miss Russell tied.

.Blackberry Jelly: Mrs King, 1; Mrs A. Davis, 2; Mrs Dear, 3-. Decorated Easter Egg: Mrs King, 1; Mrs McKenzie, 2; Mrs Gilliver, 3. Chrysanthemums: Miss Barrett, 1; Mrs Jones, 2. The president expressed pleasure at the good table of entries, in particular the brooches, which were of exceptional merit, and the makers of which were to be commended for their efforts.

The meeting closed with the National Anthem.
