FORTY YEARS AGO
BRADFORD MEMORIAL
TO BE ERECTED ON HILL
TRAP BOLTS IN PAEROA
(From the Ohinemuri Gazette of April 5, 1903.)
The Bradford Memorial Fountain which is to be erected on Kakaipo hill in the Paeroa Domain, arrived in Auckland by the Westralia on March 30 from Italy. Messrs F. Harris and Co., who have the contract for its erection, expect to have it erected in about three weeks’ time, when it should form a handsome and valuable addition to the Domain. It is probable that later on there will be some public ceremony in connection with the erection.
Yesterday afternoon a sensational bolt occurred in Paeroa. It appears that a vehicle occupied by Mrs Hunt, Miss B. Lyes, Miss A. Campbell and a small child, bolted from the direction of Tarariki creek. Mrs Hunt was in charge of the trap, and although she had had considerable experience in driving, she could not pull up the animal. .Its mad career, however, was brought to a stop just in front of Mr Cullen’s shop where it ran into the. bank and capsized. A large number of people gathered round, thinking that something serious had occurred, but fortunately no harm happened beyond a severe shaking and a few bruises.
