FORTY YEARS AGO

DAMAGE TO DRILL SHED WAIHI BOROUGH DEMANDS WORK OF THE ARBITRATOR (From the Ohinemuri Gazette of August 19, 1902) It is rather unusual for two cases to be heard at the 'Paeroa Courthouse at the same time. Yesterday, however, the Magistrate’s Court was being held in the proper room, Mr Bush presiding, while the evidence against the two accused, Johnson and Gardner, was being heard in the witnesses’ room, before the J.’sP., Messrs Forrest and Goldsworthy. * * * * -Some mischevious person has senselessly amused himself by tearing the lead flashing off the windows of the Drill -Shed. It would be well for the perpetrator of this piece of wanton mischief to take notice that the volunteers and footballers using the shed are on the look-out for him so that he shall get the punishment he deserves. Under the Defence Act, the penalty is £lO or two months’ imprisonment with hard labour. * * * * The award of the arbitrator appointed by the Government to make an adjustment of the gold revenue, as between the Ohinemuri County Council and the Waihi Borough Council, shows that the claims put forward by the county are practically agreed to. The case for the . county was conducted by the county chairman (Mr H. Poland) and the county clerk (Mr N. Kenny), and the fact that the arbitrator has awarded the ; county nearly all . that these ; gentlemen asked for, shows that their claims were just and fair, and not in any way inflated beyond proper proportions. We congratulate the County Coun- , cil, and more particularly its energetic chairman, on the satisfactory termination of its dis- : pute with the borough. The ■ demands made by the boiough were ridiculous in the extreme, ' and it is satisfactory to note that they were rejected by the 1 arbitrator, who is a gentleman ! who is thoroughly impartial.
