THE Hauraki Plains Gazette With which is Incorporated THE OHINEMURI GAZETTE. MONDAY, WEDNESDAY, FRIDAY. "Public Service.” WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 19, 1942. THESE DIFFICULT DAYS

Without seeking- to make any excuses for our apparent shortcomings over the past few months, we are taking this opportunity of explaining some of our difficulties to our readers. It has been quite impossible with less than fifty per cent, of a normal staff, to give the same news coverage as in the past. District news is what we thrive on and it is by addressing ourselves thus that we would ask secretaries of social, sports and other organisations to co-oper-ate in the matter of its collection. Under the present circumstances, with our difficulties Enhanced by Government obligations, travelling restrictions and other duties we are endeavouring to carry on as usual. We can and will continue, to give a broad portrayal of the community’s activities, but contributions and news items which will be welcomed, can greatly assist towards improving and maintaining the service until the installation of a normal staff i's again made possible. SAVE YOUR RUBBER ' Do you realise that 90 per cent, of the world’s rubber supply has now been cut off. from United Nations who are waging a life and death struggle against the forces of oppression? Never mind the recriminations on the whys and the wherefores of the fall of Malay, Singapore, the Indies and other rubber growing countries—face facts as they are today. The position is not merely serious, it is vital and upon every one of us devolves the duty of economising in rubberware of all descriptions, to the utmost. Paeroa an,d Hauraki Plains residents should realise* that all garages are collecting agencies. Do not forget—all rubber is useful, old perished, torn or forgotten. Everything of rubber composition or. fabric can be utilised; old tyres, rubber gloves, toys, water bottles, rubber coats, gum boots, tubing; in short, any article that is composed in whole or in part of rubber is needed. With the fullest co-operation of the civilian community it is estimated that the Dominion’s stocks will be sufficient to meet all requirements, but only with the fullest co-operation.
