The heaviest smokers ? A trade journal which has been digging up statistics says labourers are the heaviest smokers in the Old Country amongst outdoor workers, that the heaviest smokers amongst professional men are parsons (with writers a good second) 1 , while the women of England are the heaviest smokers of their sex, the world over. What do they all smoke? Working men, states the same authority stick to the old brands mostly,* but that the growing preference by other classes is for “something better.” Flavour and bouquet must both be choice! It’s precisely the same story in New Zealand. Brands which satisfied smokers in the past no longer satisfy and are “going out.” The modern smoker is ■more critical, more fastidious, and this tendency really dates from the coming of “toasted,” that is Cut Plug No. 10 (Bullshead), Navy Cut No. 3 (Bulldog), Pocket Edition, Riverhead Gold and Desert Gold, the purest, most fragrant, most enjoyable, and certainly the least harmful of any tobaccos manufactured. And it’s toasting which makes them so. It cuts out the nicotine! It enhances flavour and bouquet.
