THE Hauraki Plains Gazette With which is Incorporated THE OHINEMURI GAZETTE. MONDAY, WEDNESDAY, FRIDAY. “Public Service.” MONDAY, AUGUST 3, 1942. APPEAL FOR NURSES

It is not surprising that the need has arisen for an increased number of recruits to the nursing profession. Many nurses normally in civilian service have transferred to the Army and other branches of the fighting forces. In addition to this the greatly increased public demand for hospital treatment in this country has made it necessary to maintain, if not increase, institution staffs. Unfortunately the appeal for girls to present themselves as trainees comes at a difficult time. Never before have there been so many, or such varied, openings for young women—in important business posts, in essential war industries and in various special branches of national service. This competition must inevitably tend to reduce the ranks of those who in normal times would be turned instinctively to nursing as a career and painstaking, objective propaganda may be required if the profession is to be adequately served—if it is to- serve this Dominion’s future needs. One promising field for propaganda, and for the encouragement of girls who show more than ordinary interest and aptitude, would seem to be E.P.S. medical sections. Many young business girls and others, who are members of these units as part-time trainees, have already had some introduction to practical hospital work. No opportunity to foster in them a deeper and more permanent attachment should be overlooked.
