BLAMED THE HORSE
never felt the earthquake
EXPERIENCE OF MAORIS
A taxi driver was going into Te Kuiti from Hangatiki when during conversation he asked' his Maori fares had they felt the earthquake the previous night. None of them recalled it. “That’s a wonder —it was a severe shock for these parts,” was the taxidriver’s comment. And then comprehension dawned . upon one of the Maoris. “Py korry, Joe, you know last night we thought the old horse was rubbing against the whare and we set the dogs loose to chase it away—-that must’ve been the plurry earthquake!” he told his mate!
