CHILDREN HELP

COLLECTING OF SEA WEED NEEDED FOR WAR EFFORT GOOD WORK IN COROMANDEL To assist in the war effort the school children of Coromandel have been collecting agar seaweed and at the monthly meeting of the Coromandel County Council a letter was received from the Inspector of Fisheries at Coromandel, Mr E. W. Gilliver, asking for assistance in facilitating the shipment of the material collected to Auckland. Mi’ Gilliver stated that he had been asked to make known the need for the agar seaweed in connection with the war effort and the schoolchildren had been asked to collect it.

Several carriers had agreed to cart the weed to the wharf free of charge and Mr Strongman had agreed to carry it freight free to Auckland as an 'encouragement to the children. He pointed out that a shilling per pound for the dry weed would be paid but that much effort was required to collect same and if freight and charges were deducted it would reduce the amount paid per pound, hence the offers of free freight, etc.
