MUCH ACHIEVED

NGATEA DISTRICT HIGH WORK OF THE COMMITTEE BETTER SPORTS FACILITIES “During the period since the last election the Public Works Department has undertaken the grading and sealing of the school grounds. Large sealed areas have been laid down, thus providing all weather playing and drill grounds for all sections of the school pupils. The work has been well done and the grassed areas have been graded to allow the water to get rapidly away,” reported the chairman of the Ngatea District High School Committee, Mr C. E. Burrows, to the bi-ennial meeting of householders recently in dealing with the work done by the committee in the last two years. The report continued: — .

“The success of the school ball made it possible for the purchase of a motor lawn mower and also a wireless receiving set for use in conjunction with the amplifier previously purchased. The lawn mower’ has proved its worth. The fine and. extensive lawns around the school bear this out.

Credit To Caretaker

“Great credit is due to the caretaker Mr Ingrouville, for the way he carries out his duties and the' pride he takes in keeping the lawns and grounds in such a fine condition.

“The corner next to the Infant School has been fenced and cleaned up making the road much safer and a good hedge will be planted along the curve this autumn.

“The dental clinic has been moved to its new site and painted and alterations made to bring it up-to-date. “The playing area was far too small so a further four acres were purchased and have now been fenced in and made available to the pupils. “Through the generosity of the parents and the public a fine swimming bath has been built at a cost of over £2OO, and those who were at the opening of the baths will have seen how suitable the type is for the teaching of swimming to the young pupils. Many Staff Changes

“With regard to the staff of the school: There have been many changes during the last two years and great credit is due to the headmaster and. his staff for the splendid results he has achieved in such a la>ge pronortion of passes gained by his scholars and at the end of this report I will ask Mr Thomas to give you details of the staff who are serving the country at home and abroad and the difficulties they have been under through the over-crowding of pupils, and. also other items of interest to the parents. To the whole of the members who are serving their country we extend our best wishes and a safe return. To Mrs Green of the secondary staff we extend congratulations on the promotion of her husband to commissioned rank in the British Navy. “Your committee is grateful to the parents and friends who helped to make the sports and social events in the past so successful. Before concluding I would like to thank the members of the committee for the help and the cordial manner in which .all our meetings have been held, during our term of office. To Mr Mears, who has had a lot of clerical work to do, and the voluntary work of all the committee who have provided horses and machines in .addition to days of work on the grounds and painting the clinic, I extend sincere thanks.”
