INCREASE WANTED
PRICE OF BUTTERFAT WAGES ARE NOW HIGHER REQUEST BY FARMERS’ UNION At the annual meeting of the Northern Thames Sub-Province of the Farmers’ Union on the motion of Messrs Jackson and Cheale it was decided that the Government be asked to introduce legislation increasing the price of butterfat to the farmers.
Speaking to the motion, Mr Gheale pointed! out that wages were higher and necessities dearer than during the last war. Taking out some figures, he found that in the last war 2501 b
of butterfat at 1/7 a lb sterling realised £l9/15/10 nett, after paying all costs. • To-day, at New Zealand currency, it realised .£l3/14/10, and after* deducting social and national security and other taxes and charges, £lO/18/8 was left. The figures also disclosed that the farmer received £6 1/- mo're in sterling during the last war than in New Zealand "burreney to-day.
