81-MONTHLY MEETINGS

POWER BOARD DISCUSSION

OPPOSITION FROM MEMBERS

“ With the meagre petrol allowance restricting means of travel to and from meetings, I feel

that this board would be thoroughly justified in meeting every two months until such time as conditions improve,” stated Mr J. Price, chairman of the Thames Valley Power Board, at the monthly meeting held on Tuesday.

The speaker went on to say that should any business apart from the ordinary routine arise at any time members' could be called together for the purpose of dealing with it. The Finance Committee, continued Mr Price, could deal with correspondence during the interim. Mr J. F. Mayn stated' that there appeared to be a great deal of correspondence to deal with each month and wondered if ratepayers would agree to the suggestion. He had every confidence in the executive officers being able to execute the routine business, however. Mr H. M. Corbett said that while every endeavour should be made to conserve benzine, he was doubtful whether it would be wise to curtail meetings of the board. It may be suggested later that they meet even less frequently than bi-monthly. Some other authority may eventually force them out of existence, but he saw no reason why they should put themselves out. He would not favour a change being made until at least the end of the financial year. Mr W. C. Kennedy: If regular monthly meetings are dropped there is a danger of interest being lost in the board’s affairs, and economy made in petrol costs may be lost in some other direction.

Mr F. E. Flatt: Everything should be done to save the board expense, but personally I don’t wish to foist the board members’ responsibilities on to executive officers. I am not prepared to make a change. As no resolution on the subject came forward the question was dropped.
