WOMEN’S DIVISION

KEREPEEHIBRANCH The monthly meeting of the Kerepeehi branch of the Women’s Division was held in the hall last week, Mrs Strong presiding. There was a good attendance of members. The secretary, Mrs L Poland, reported on the success of the bazaar held recently. Matters discussed included dressmaking classes, also the educational week convened by the Waitemata provincial executive to be held in Auckland to which the daughters of members were invited. Mrs A. Fisher was asked to buy prizes for the card evenings to be held during the winter months.

• Mrs W. Shilton referred to a letter received from the St. John Ambulance with regard to the forming of a class and members decided to support this. The members were joined by the farmers’ union at lunch. Mesdames B. Rawlangs and W. Shilton were hostesses. FASHIONS JOTTINGS

Mbst autumn hats are tiny, and many, such as Molyneux’s triangular black velvet toque with a bright blue veil, are veiled to answer all maidens’ prayers to hide those wisps of hair.

For” town wear a tailored white lamb coat with a Turkish-towel surface, piped and belted in black suede. Mbire is making a hit for dinner suits, and a Sevres blue moire suit is relieved with a red moire rosette, moire cummerbund and bolero. Black broadtail, with a collar of natural blue fox, swathed across the waistline, makes a striking town coat for the woman who adores black. SOME GOOD IDEAS An old beret will make a washable slip-on cover for a polishing mop, if elastic is threaded through the hem. Old chamois leather gloves make excellent polishers for windows, and for silver and furniture, too. Rip up the sides, lay the gloves flat on the table, the more layers the better, and machine them together in the centre with circles of stitching, making them into a substantial pad. An old lamp-shade makes a splendid food protector for use in the larder, or on the table when it is laid in advance. Take off the covering, and tack over the wire frame a new covering of butter muslin.
