FLOOD DANGER
THE HAURAKI PLAINS POSSIBILITY REMOTE MEASURES FOR PREVENTION. In spite of many severe storms this year the damage caused by flood in February, 1936, on the Hauraki Plains has not looked like being repeated. It may be remembered that the Hauraki Plains County Council’s west water supply dam was damaged, and that the Waitakaruru stream rose rapidly, flooding a large portion of that district. Considerable damage was also done to the pipe-line, to roads and to bridges. The strengthening of the dam undertaken last spring, however, has made any danger of a further breakdown very improbable. The Waitakaruru stream has been extensively stopbanked in the upper portions from Mr J. D. Fagan’s property downwards. It is expected that this banking will in future be able to control any flood water brought down. The Hauraki United Drainage Board is also making arrangements to have the east bank of the Piako river at Horahia raised and strengthened, as any unusually high tide floods land adjoining the river. In spite of very bad weather experienced at times since the flood of 1925, the stop-banking of the Piako river has been able to cope with any amount of water. The flooding danger on the Plains has now been reduced to a minimum.
