LACK OF FIXTURES
SPORT FOR TO-MORROW NO MATCHES SET DOWN BASKETBALL AND FOOTBALL No sporting fixtures are scheduled for Paeroa to-morrow. The local hockey competitions are completed, the basketball association’s representatives are absent, participating in the tournament at Rotorua, and all football matches are postponed on account of the second test, South Africa versus New Zealand.
Rugby matches are practically completed for the season, only Paeroa junior and Thames Valley representative engagements remaining to be played. In any case, interest in local games is negligible when a test match is being broadcast. The only hockey fixtures to be played this season are matches with Waikato and Kiwi (Auckland), the latter probably on September 25. Yesterday the Paeroa basketball representatives left by train for Rotorua for the annual tournament, to be staged to-day and to-morrow. They will return on Monday. The tourney,’played for the Kurungaituku ca’rved Maori trophy, has drawn 18 entries and Paeroa will compete in the B section. In the first round it has drawn Hastings B.
Members of the West Football Club will leave to-morrow morning to play a friendly match with the Kahukura club, Rotorua, and they will spend the week-end there, returning on Sunday.
