ORCHARD WEST ROAD
ALTERNATIVE STOCK ROUTE AREA OF LAND TO BE OPENED. Advocates of the opening of the Orchard west road, Hauraki Plains, were supported by the quarterly conference of the Northern Thames subprovincial executive of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union held at Paeroa yesterday. The value of the road as a stock route and to take stock from the main road was stressed. Mr ‘C. W. Schultz (Ngatea) said that shifting stock on the main road in winter was a “real nightmare.” The Orchard west route would not only obviate the difficulties on the main road but would also shorten the distance. A large area of land would also be opened up for- selection if the road were, put through, contended Mr J. S. McClune (Waitakaruru), and it should be insisted upon that it should be an all-weather route. There was a quarry only 25 minutes away with plenty of metal available at a lowprice. There was less than five or six miles to metal. On the motion of Messrs and McClune the union agreed to put the matter before the Minister of Lands and forward a copy of the letter to the Hauraki Plains CountyCouncil.
