CONTROL BY THE DAIRY BOARD 1 < FARMERS’ UNION RESOLUTION, j Bobby calf pools and their ramifica- ’ tions were discussed at length by the delegates to the quarterly conference of the farmers’ union at Paeroa yesterday, and the action of pools and buyers as well as the carriers gave food for protracted debate, mostly of < a casual nature rather than formal remits. Mr T. Considine (Netherton) reported that the Netherton pool was proving quite a success and was easily worked. Farmers received 2d per lb. at the farm gate, less Is 3d per animal handling and carting charges. The pool aimed at getting the calves killed by the Auckland Farmers’ Freezing Company and so to benefit the farmers of the province. Carriers’ Methods. What his pool had to avoid were cases of carriers with more than one vehicle carrying both for the pool and, with another lorry, for a buying ■ firm, stated Mr C. W. Schultz (Ngatea). His pool deducted Is 3d for handling, the district being 30 miles from the railhead. Pool operations were very pleasing to farmers as they received about 6s 6d for Jerseys in the past and his first lot this year averaged 10s. The pool was entirely responsible for the extra cash pay-out, Mr Schultz declared. Some discussion ensued on the actions of various buying organisations and their alleged attempts to break up the pools. The provincial president, Mr H. O. Mellsop, explained the case of one buying firm in committee. A resolution moved by Mr Considine and seconded by Mrs J. Fisher (Women’s Division) was carried: “That the farmers’ union recognises the good work done by the pools but asks the Auckland provincial executive to keep: - in view, control by the New Zealand i Dairy Board.”
