OBITUARY

MR. ALFRED J. BROAD. The death occurred at his home in William Street, Cambridge, on December 13, of Mr Alfred John Broad, aged 81 years, father of Messrs A. E. Broad of Remuera, W. J. Broad, of Paeroa, F. H. Broad, of Mercury Bay, and Mrs Payne, of South Benfleet, England. Mr Broad came to New Zealand 25 years ago and conducted a general stere at Cambridge till his retirement in 1930. Prior to coming to New Zealand he was a builders’ surveyor in the Army and ‘Navy Auxiliary Cooperative Supply Stores, Ltd., of London, and for part of that time was also a manager of the Evening Continuation Schools, where his assistance was much appreciated by the School Board of London. As a young man he took a very keen interest in military matters, being ah officer in the Artillery Volunteers. In sport Mr Broad showed great interest in cricket, having played at Lords. Throughout his life, Mr Broad ahvays took an active part in the Baptist Church work, and held office in the Northcote Road Baptist Church, London, for five years, and upon arrival in Cambridge attended the first service of Baptists, and his help and counsel was much appreciated in connection with the erection of a new church, in which he held office for a number of years. Mr Broad’s father, William Broad, was a well-known artist in England, he being a cousin to the celebrated animal artist, Sir Sydney Cooper. Senator Millen, of Australia, was another cousin of Mr Broad. He is survived by his widow, three sons, one daughter, seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and one sister, Miss Catherine Broad, of London.

MR. WALTER PETERS. Mr Walter Peters, a well-known resident of Kaiaua was found drowned on Monday evening in a creek on his property at Kaiaua. Mr Peters has been subject to heart attacks and it is surmised that he fell into the creek during a seizure. Deceased was about 65 years of age and is survived by his wife, three daughters and one son. Originally believed to have come from North Auckland, Mr Peters was. one of the earliest pioneers of the district. The deceased was a follower of cricket and was well-known as a cattle dealer on the Plains. He did not take an active interest in local body affairs, though his brother was, at one time, a member of the Thames County Council.
