V.C. ON RELIEF.
:o: ■ CASE AT PAEROA. UNEMPLOYED WAR HERO. Surprise and concern were expressed at the special meeting of PiakoHauraki Plains joint traffic group, at Te Aroha, says the News, when the chairman (Mr W. C. Kennedy) announced, when applications for the position of traffic inspector were under discussion, that a man working in a Paeroa camp was the holder of the Victoria Cross and several other war decorations. “He is one of the seven holders of this distinguished order in New Zealand,” said Mr Kennedy, “and yet he is compelled to go on relief.” Mr R. Coulter said it was a shocking thing and certainly a reflection on the Government that such a man should be allowed to remain unemployed . Mr Kennedy said that few people knew of the case. The man had not said anything and it was only by accident that he was discovered.
