EARTHQUAKE EFFECT.
SLIPWAY AT NAPIER. The extension by 130 feet of Messrs Northey and Richardson’s slipway at Westshore, Napier, which has been necessary owing to the level of the water since the earthquake, is not proceeding at as satisfactory a pace as ■would be liked, on account of a number of difficulties which are being met with, says the “Poverty Bay Herald.” The slipway has not been able to be used since the earthquake, and there are a number of vessels in the port which are in need of attention. On account of the coldness of the water, it is not possible for divers to remain under water' for any length of time, and their work is also hampered owing to the activities of the dragline scraper, which is operating some distance away, discolouring the water so that the divers are.unable to see what they are doing. . A lighter was on the slip at the time of the earthquake, and it is still there. A few days ago one of the trayvlers was .beached off West quay to allow repairs to the shaft to be carried, out, but while this was being carried out the vessel filled with water and she is now lying half submerged awaiting refloating. A similar experience befel another of the trawlers. Work was being carried out on her while at the customary berthing place, and she filled with water, but was eventually refloated.
