W.E.A.
NEARING END OF SESSION. REVIEW OF STUDIES. The local circles of the Workers’ Educational Association met last evening in the Public Library. The work consisted of a review of the course, “More Drama,” which has been followed this year. The lecture supplied was followed, and then amplified by the comments of members. Particularly noted were the changes of the last fifty years in ’ dramatic presentation and aim, the cross-over from the glorification of the actors to the appeal of intelligence upon the minds of the auditors. The plays of social purpose, which mark the work of the moderns, were seen to have greater appeal ,to a better educated age. The play and its purpose has replaced the adulatidn of players, and greatly improved dictation has supplanted the stirring, accents of the days of Irwin. Altogether an excellent summary ofx the latest transitional epoch in dramatic art was presented to members. Suggestions for the securmg of even greater interest in Workers’ Educational Association activities were adopted, to be sent forward to headquarters. Mr E. V. SlyfieH presided. “The New Hangman,” by Laurence Housman, and “The Prodigal,” by F. 0. Bennett, will be read at next meeting. “Milestones” (Arnold Bennett), a three period play, will conclude the session on Thursday, September 10th.
