SCHOOL SPORTS.
PLAINS CHAMPIONSHIPS. CUPS AND CERTIFICATES PRESENTED. During last week the President of the Hauraki Plains. Primary School Championship Sports Association (Mr C. S. Foster, of Ngatea) visited a number of the schools participating in the sports in March of this year, and presented to schools and scholars trophies and certificates gained by them. On Monday last Mr Foster yisited Kopuarahi, Turua, and Netherton, and on Friday, Kerepeehi, Patetonga and Kaihere. ■ He will make his visits to the remaining schools some time during this week. The School Championship Cup was presented to the .. Netherton School, which won also the cup for the highest aggregate of points gained in boys’ events. \ The championship cup for ; small schools in the district went to Kaihere, while Ngatea gains the remaining trophies, the Benny rose bowl for runners up in the championship aggregate points, and the cup awarded for the highest aggregate points in girls’ events. In past years a function has been held at Ngatea for the purpose of making the presentation, but this year, on account of the financial position, this was considered inadvisable. However, ,it-4eems that the majority of the committee are agreed that the presentation of • trophies at the schools is the best course. All the children, many of whom could not attend a presentation function for, various reasons, are thus brought into contact with the sports and a universal interest is maintained. They see the prizes awarded to their fellows, the cups won by their schools, and are thereby induced to participate at the next meeting. There is no doubt that this method, of, presentation keeps a greater number of the children directly interested in the sports. At Netherton and Kaihere, both championship cup winners, where the presentations, were made in the afternoon, the comi'nittees, after the function, allowed the schools to close for the remainder of the day.
