OBITUARY.

MR. PETER L HAROILD. Another Thames pioneer has been removed by the death of Mr' Peter L. Harold at his home in Ardmore Road, Herne Bay, Auckland, on Thursday last. Born-in Jersey, Channel Islands, 85 years ago, Mr Harold had been nearly 70 years in New Zealand. ’When he was 12 years old he went to sea and sailed round the world several times in the old clippers o£ those days. During his travels he visited the United States at the time of the Civil War. Later in the sixties Mr Harold used his knowledge of navigation for carrying on trade in a small vessel sailing about the bays and inlets of the Hauraki Gulf. After some time spent in Gisborne and the South Island he settled at Thames in the days, of the gold rush. He married Miss Annie Jamieson, the eldest daughter of tfle late Mr W. Barr Jamieson, of Tapu, Thames, on June 3. 1876, the ceremony being performed at St. Francis’, Thames, by Father Chastayno’n . The couple celebrated their golden wedding last year. Soon after he retired, about 20 years ago, Mr Harold made a trip Home and visited many of his relatives in Jersey same of whom he had not seen for over 60 years. Having been initiated a member of the Loyal Thames Lodge of the Manchester Unity Oddfellows in 1872, he claimed to be the oldest member of the lodge. Two

Mr A. N. Harold, of Whangarei; and E. R. Harold, of Auckland ; and the daughters Mi's G. H. Taylor of Paeroa, Mrs C. H. Buchanan, of Wellington, and Mrs F. Lowson, of Auckland. There are 32 grandchildren.
