WANTON DESTRUCTION.
DAMAGE IN TAYLOR’S AVENUE. BEAUTIFYING SOCIETY’S LOSS. During the la, ? t twenty-four hours the Paeroa Beautifying Society has been made a target for a person or persons with a desire to commit wanton mischief. About a fortnight ago' the society caused to be, planted a row 1 of ornamental trees, along Taylor’s Avenue—some 70 trees in all. The trees were purchased from the slender funds of the society, in Addition tb a number which were debated. The arduous work of digging the holes, planting and staking the trees, was carried .out by voluntary workers.
This morning it was found that one tree had been torn out by the roots and thrown down, two had been broken off, and several others more or less damaged.
It seems incredible that anyone should commit such a dastardly act, . and ones wonders how a human being can derive any pleasure or satisfaction from such wantonness. Careful examination shows- that the da,mage has been caused by the human hands;, and not by straying stock. The police have the matter in hand, and in cooperation with the society’s officials a determined effort is to be made tb bring the culprits to book.
