SPECIAL COUNCIL MEETING.

QUEEN CARNIVAL DISCUSSED.

A special meeting of tiie Paeroa Borough Council was held on Monday night, His Worship the Mayor (Mr W. Marshall) presiding over the fellowing: Crs. P. E. Branan, E. Edwards, F. E. Flatt, J. W. Silcock, H, J, Hare, G. P. de Castro. J. Pinder, and the town clerk (Mr W. C. Alex.ander). The Mayor briefly explained that tiie. meeting had been ca.lled for the purpose, of discussing the applications for various permits made by tiie coihmittee of the Carnival Queens in connection witli tire campaign for raising funds for the ina|Uguration of a boys’ brass band, and other matters. After considerable discussion the following resolution was carried unanimously

“That while, giving its! general support to ihe movement, this council is of ‘he opinion that the present queen carnival contest, the, object, of which is to raise funds for the Boy Scouts and Girl Guides, should cease operations on June 30 next, and tha,t the council does not propose to grant any further permits after that date.” Tire foregoing resolution was forwarded to Mr E. W. Porritt, who is 1 district commissioner of the Boy Scouts.

Applications were received from tiie secretary of the Queen Carnival Committee asking for permission to conduct a shooting gallery on a suitable site.

Tiie application was granted, and Pt permit was issued without the necessity of a license, such permit to be operative only until June 30. Permission was also granted to conduct stalls and side-shows on a suitable section under the same conditions.

An application to lay a copper trail on Friday next refused.
