NGARUAWAHIA 21 v TAUPIRI 8. A large crowd of spectators witnessed the above game at Ngaruawahia on Saturday and they were rewarded with a fine exhibition of clean, hard football, with flashes of brilliant solo and combined efforts., The local men were infinitely superior on the day and they have only to keep up their form to win the competition. The Play. Ngaruawahia kicked off and the game fluctuated for a time in the Ngaruawahia 25. Jackways found the line well in the local territory, Ngaruawahia clearing to halfway. Ngaruawahia were awarded a free from which they almost scored, Taupiri forcing. Taupiri started an attack, the ball going out to Tremain who made a dash down the sideline and kicked over the fullback’s head and following up fast regained possession and scored. G. Tittleton failed with the kick. Ngaruawahia carried play to Taupiri 25 where Barakat failed with a penalty kick. From a scrum Abbott secured and sent on to Kelly who cut in nicely before passing to Laird who scored at the corner. W. Abbott goaled with a good kick. Taupiri shifted play to Ngaruawahia’s 25 and Tittleton failed to land a penalty goal. Shortly afterwards Jackways was also unsuccessful with a free, but made no mistake with another right in front. Ngaruawahia started a passing rush and W. Tittleton sold a clever dummy and sent on to Mason who lacked pace to score. The local men were awarded a free and Barakat goaled. A rush by Taupiri looked dangerous when W. Abbott fumbled, but the local defence held. Play returned to the opposite end where a great dash by Hill ended in his being pushed out at the corner. From the ensuing scrum E. Abbott scored. W. Abbott failed with the kick. Failure to pick up lost Taupiri an opportunity and soon after E. Abbott marked. Taupiri were keeping the local men hard at it and Taupiri had a good chance when G. Tittleton secured and passed to Dwen whose return pass was forward. Ngaruawahia gradually shifted play to Taupiri’s quarter where W. Tittleton was responsible for a good effort, and in a race for the ball G. Tittleton touched down. W. Abbott failed with a penalty kick and Taupiri headed by Jackways raced downfield but bad passing spoilt a chance The game was now very fast, play swinging up and down the field at a great rate A spirited attack by Ngaruawahia ended in Evans scoring Barakat failed with the kick. Shortly after G Tittleton made a great dash down the side line, and i half time came soon afterwards. Menzies secured from the kick off and threw a long pass infield but Tittleton failed to take Robinson made a good solo effort and sent on to Kelly who raced down the sideline before being grassed. Taupiri attacked but were penalised in the local 25, clearing to halfway. Taupiri kept up the attack and a fine passing rush ended in Tremain being pushed out. Ngaruawahia retaliated and a wonderful effort by E. Abbott ended in him being pushed out at the corner. Taupiri cleared and a rush by their forwards looked promising but W. Ab- j bott made a clever save. Ngaruawahia invaded the visitor’s territory, but neither side had the advantage any length of time. The ball went out to Kelly who passed to Mason the latter making a good effort before being grassed. Taupiri were striving hard, but the defence of the local boys was good. Ngaruawahia started a passing rush the ball going as far as Robinson who held on too long. W. Abbott found the line near the corner, but Jackways cleared with a nice dribbling rush. Ngaruawahia were back, and E. Abbott short punted, and following up fast compelled Garry to force. Tittleton shot through from a melee at the 25 yard flag and after making a nice op.ening sent on to McBurney who raced over to score. E. Abbott goaled. Taupiri had a brief respite in the local 25 where Wal. Tittleton who was playing a fine game was conspicuous. Taupiri were awarded a free from which they continued to press. From a scrum near the line Ngaruawahia cleared. Garry beat several men but lack of support spoilt an opportunity. Ngaruawahia were having a spell of attack until Garry shot through and made an opening before sending to Smith who carried play to the Ngaruawahia 25. Taupiri started a passing rush that ended in Tremain scoring after a tricky run. G. Tittleton failed. After a spell of play in Ngaruawahia’s 25 Kelly made a dodgy run and passed to Laird who scored at the corner. W. Abbott failed. The game ended w r ith the scores Ngaruawahia 21, Taupiri 8. Mr A.
