WAITERIMU WHISPERINGS AND MATAHURU MURMURINGS

By

“Fernleaf.”

' At last some very welcome rain has fallen and it was badly needed as there has not been a really good down pour since October sth, so that water was in short supply both for the houses and the gardens, not to mention the fields. Hay crops will be very light this season as a result, whilst the cold snap we experienced last month caused farmers to use up a lot more of their reserves in the shape of hay or ensilage than usual. On the 12th Mr and Mrs C. F. C. Storey, of Waiterimu, who has Miami Mrs Gordon, of Penrose, staying with them, gave a most enjoyable bridge evening for which Mrs Storey’s parents, Mr and Mrs M. Welsh made a special trip from Ngaruawahia to attend. The rooms were, beautifully decorated with some lovely sweet peas, and roses and pansies which evoked great admiration owing to their size and colours. When scores were totalled up it was- found that Miss Welsh, of Ngaruawahia, was the leading lady, whilst Mr S. W. lies was decorated with the Order of the Gart cr (sic) for having highest scores of the males. At the other end were Mr W. Storey and Miss Newton. The Waiterimu Sports Club has now got its programme arranged for its annual meetings on New Year’s Day when it is hoped to have visitors from far and near. A splendid programme has been arranged which includes the usual events associated with such a gathering such as 100 yards and h mile foot races, single and married ladies’ races, stockman’s competition, bending races, tilting the ring, hunters* competitions, etc., for horsemen. There is also a sack race and something quite new round about here in a tug of war for teams of 8. The prize money in this (and in fact in all the events is good) and it is hoped that teams from- Huntly and all the surrounding districts will enter so that this event may become one of the chief ones with big prize Bnioney. Now then, Huntly and surrounding districts, pick your teams and practice and show your mettle.
