DESTRUCTIVE FIRE

1 SHOP DESTROYED f SMART WORK BY BRIGADE. i Early on Sunday morning the sound ) of the fire syren awoke the inhabitants of the town and called them forth from bed to the scene of the lire which was Saulbrey’s buildings, Gt. South Road, where the shop occupied by Mrs C. Quintal, confectioner and tea rooms, was discovered to be on fire, the flames having a strong hold of the building. As usual the fire brigade acted with marvellous promptitude, and the brigade s reel with hoses and ladders was on the scene in three minutes from the sounding of the syren andsoon had a couple of leads run out, and hoses playing. In about ten minutes they had the fire under control, but it took nearly two hours before it was finally extinguished. The fire spread to ihe adjacent shop on the northern side, occupied by D. C. Joe, fruiterer, and obtained a hold of the roof. The firemen got to work on this fire, stripped off the skylights and some sheets of iron, and soon got this secondary fire under control and extinguished. They did fine saving work here. As soon as the brigade arrived on the scene, it was found that the fire was beginning to take a hold in the roof of the rear portion of the shop of Mr. J. H. Heath, grocer. The firemen ran a hose through the shop, and soon extinguished this incipient conflagration. Fortunately, this was put out so quickly that Mr. Heath’s grocery stocks in the shop suffered no damage whatever, although the hardware which was stored along the wall nearest the burining shop, and some of the bulk goods in the storeroom at the back suffered damage by water. Fortunately, no damage was done by smoke. (Note. Wc have inserted this refrom the Ngaruawahia “Advocate ’ to show the citizens of Huntly the value of a water supply and a fire brigade.)
