HUNTLY v. NGARUAWAHIA

The first of a series of football matches which it is intended to play between the Huntly, Taupiri and Ngaruawahia teams was played at the Recreation Ground on Saturday last between teams representing Huntly and Ngaruawahia. Ngaruawaliia was weakened by the absence of two or three of the selected men, still, they put up a really good fight against a team that played well to a man, and which was on the attack nearly all the time. The day was an ideal one for football, the groud being sodden and a heavy wind blowing across the field, but the players largely overcame the weather conditions and a fast game resulted. Huntly won the toss and Ngaruawahia kicked off. Give and take play followed, and at the end of the first ten minutes, fast following up enabled Mayall to score a good try for Huntly. Rayner’s kick at goal, though a good one, was not successful. Fast, even play was now the order for some time, but eventually Ngaruawaliia got into serious difficulties near their own line, and in trying to extricate themselves, an x infringement of the rules was made, which gave Huntly a free kick. The kick which was taken by Peckham, resulted in a good goal. The score now was Huntly ... ... 5 Ngaruawahia ... 0

On recommencement of play, Ngaruawahia put in some determined work and were the attacking party for some time, and Melndoe, by fast following up, gained possession of the ball, and making a good opening, passed out to H. Morris, who scored near the posts. Booth converted and the score stood, 5 all. A little lively play towards the end of the spell, resulted in Peckhatn getting over. The kick at goal again failed, and the spell ended with Huntly 3 points in the lead. ' In the second spall, Huntly had Ngaruawahia defending practically all the time, with just occasional breaks. Despite the heavy pressure, however, Huntly was prevented from scoring for a long time till a good rush byMayall ana Callaghan gave the latter a good chance, which he took and scored. Peckham converted from a difficult angle. The game ended shortly after with the score standing, Huntly 13, Ngaruawahia 5. For the winners, Tonga Mahuta, Callaghan and Mayall played well, and for the losers, H. Morris, R. Sprague, and Melndoe showed to best advantage. Mr W. Park controlled the game.
