AID TO GREECE
860 YEARS' AGO.
It is 860 years since English troops previously supported the Greeks in Epirus against Italian invaders. When Robert Guiscard, Duke of Apulia, invaded Albania and Epirus in 1080 A.D., the Greek Emperor relied largely on the Englishmen ;n his Varangian Guards. Robert’s forces consisted of southern Italians, led and stiffened by William the Nonnan.
They formed the centre of the Greek Army at the battle of Durazzo in 1081 A.D., and fought with stubborn valor. Guiscard, “the Cunning.” was almost routed.
He contrived to win by the dodge of a feigned retreat, which William the Conqueror had used at Hastings 15 years earlier.
The ]talo-N’orinans took .Tania and entered Thessaly and Macedonia, but the invasion faiied.
