MELBOURNE CUP CRITICISM
(Australian Press Association;
SYDNEY, December 4. The “Sun” turf writer takes New Zealand newspapers to ask over incidents prior to the Melbourne Cup, involving El Golea and Beau Vito and says: “These have been featured in New Zealand from an unfortunate angle, the inference being that the incidents were inspired by bookmakers. The “Sun” adds: While all wholesome racing people deplore the Beau Yite affair, it was quite unfair to blame bookmakers in the absence of absolute proof. The Bookmakers’ Association in Melbourne was quick to offer a reward for the clearing up of the El Golea attack. Moreover, the New Zealand owners are not entirely satisfied with the betting conditions in tb Dominion itself. They lost no opportunity of tackling the best in Australia in the hardest of all races.”
