FALSE PRETENCES.

AUCKLAND, September 12. A charge of obtaining £7O from Wong Kee with intent to defraud by falsely representing that furniture was her own unencumbered property was preferred against Mary Benson Cannon, domestic, aged 28, in the Police Court, before Mr F. H. Levien, S.M, Evidence' was given by salesmen of a furniture company t-hat accused, under the name of Mary Jackson, bought furniture in August, 1939, under a hire purchase agreement. Nothing was heard of her after November and last July a complaint was made to the police. Last month the manager of the company went to 166 Hobson Street, and found, property similar to that supplied to, Mary Jackson. Interviewed in Wellington, accused admitted buying the furniture, but said a man had agreed to pay off the account. She sold the furniture on that understanding. Accused pleaded not guilty anji was committed to the Supreme Court for trial. Bail was fixed at £IOO with a surety of the same amuont, a condition being that accused should report once a week to the police.
