It was aimed at disruption and the smashing of the morale of the British nation. He also condemned the dangerous practice, of spreading rumours which were absolutely untrue and without the • slightest foundation. Those who liked to believe' the worst were just as bad as those who spread the false rumours. He requested the people' not to become alarmed, hut always to remain cool whatever the situation they may be placed in. The Government would always take the people into their confidence in regard to* important matters, as the war developed. Particularly in the East, the rumours might he .intensified, and when these were circulated with a view to presaging defeat fo Britain, he asked the people to do their very best to check them straight away. Now was the tipie for the people to realise the position confronting the British Commonwealth of Nations and the necessity for unity, putting into the background all political controversies, and settling themselves to the one task of achieving a victory.
