BUILDING TRADE
GOVERNMENT TO COMPETE. (Per Press Association.—Copyright.) CHRISTCHURCH, April 28. To meet the intense demand, the Housing Department intends to enter the building trade, according to' an announcement made to-day by the Minister, Hon. H. T. Armstrong, who said a system, under which wages gangs would be employed, would be put into operation within a few weeks. The Department would compete with contractors and a close watch would be made to see how fat this innovation would be successful. The system will begin in Wellington. The Minister also said that inducement would be offered trade unions to form building parties. It was filso prepared to assist unions taking up tliis class of work. to employ extra men and train them in trades.
