A contract has been let by the Public Works Department to the Dispatch Foundry Coy., Ltd., Greymoutli, ror the fabrication, supply and delivery of structural steel, iron work and bolts, for. si footway on the Buffer Diver bridge, at Westport. The contract price was £678 17s.

The match for the McLean football trophy for senior competition will be held on October Ist. according to advico received by the Westland Rugby Sub-Union from the West Coast Union. Ah electric echo-sounding device is to he installed in the Melanesian Mission ship Southern Cross before she leaves Auckland for the New Hebrides at the end of the month. When the instrument-is in use continuous readings are given of the depth of water. As the vessel has to negotiate treacherous and badly-charted stretches of water the device will be a valuable protection. A similar instrument is being (installed in ffhe Auckland Harbour Board’s pilot launch Waitemata.

At the Magistrate’s Court at Greymouth, yesterday, a married man, aged 42 years, of Christchurch,, whose name was suppressed, appeared before Mr Raymond Ferner } S.M., charged that, on August 25, and on divers dates to September 17, at Greymoutfi, he received sums totalling £SO, on terms requiring him to pay the money to the firm by whom lie was employed, and that he failed to account for the money, thereby committing theft. Accused, who was not represented by counsel, elected to be dealt with summarily, and pleaded guilty. DetectiveSergeant H. E. Knight, who conducted the prosecution, said that accused was sent to canvass for orders on the West Coast on the basis of 15 per cent commission and a bonus of 6s 8d on each order. Between August 25 and September 17, he did not send any money to the firm, and they were unable to get in touch with him. The manager arrived at Greymouth that morning, and located accused, who was arrested. Nothing was previously known against him. Accused was convicted, admitted to probation for 18 months, and ordered to make restitution of the £SO. He whs warned not to regard this leniency too lightly. If lie came before the Court again, this conviction would count against him.
